Xiaomi has launched its first ever made in India smartphone, the Redmi 2 Prime, today.

As part of its India expansion plans, the Redmi 2 Prime is the first smartphone to be manufactured in the country by the Chinese smartphone maker. In a special event, company chief Hugo Barra addressed the media and Mi fans while announcing the new smartphone and companies India plan.

The Redmi 2 Prime comes with a 4.7-inch IPS HD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 410 64-bit chipset combined with 2GB RAM. It comes with an 8 megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture. The 4G dual-SIM budget smartphone comes with 16 GB internal storage and has been priced at Rs 6,999.

In tune with Xiaomi’s plans, the Redmi 2 Prime is an improved variant of the Redmi 2 that was introduced in India earlier this year for a price of Rs 6,999 and featured 8 GB internal storage and 1 GB RAM.
